2011 Research Team
Alisha Bruce is a junior double majoring in Communication and Political Science. Alisha was born and raised in Longview, Washington, and has a younger brother and sister. Her favorite activities include snowboarding and going to concerts. This past quarter, she also started interning at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as an Event Marketing Intern.
Anne Durkin is a senior at the University of Washington. She is studying international relations and communication. Her hometown is Sylvania, Ohio. She is working as a personal chef and interning for a web consulting firm. After graduation, Anne hopes to pursue a career with the State Department in an embassy.
Jourdan Fluke is a senior at the University of Washington and is double majoring in Communication and Spanish. Born and raised in Seattle, WA, Jourdan loves to ski, travel, spend time outdoors, and enjoys a good dose of reality television. She originally attended Colgate University in Hamilton, NY and transferred to the UW winter quarter of her sophomore year. She recently studied abroad for four months in Cadiz, Spain and has spent periods of time in Spanish-speaking countries as well as other countries around the world. She spent the summer of 2010 working at a winery in eastern Washington and hopes to pursue a career in the wine or sports industries.
Zeina Hamed is a senior at the University of Washington, where she is pursuing a double degree in International Relations and Communication. In June 2011, she will receive her BA in Global Communication from the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, as well as a degree in Communication – with an emphasis on public relations. In the summer of 2009, Zeina studied Arabic culture and language at Notre Dame University near Beirut, Lebanon. This winter, she is partaking in a Task Force for which she will travel to Ottawa, Canada to help form policies regarding governance efforts in the Arctic region. With a passion for traveling and discovering new cultures, Zeina hopes to someday work in the field of global public relations and thereafter acquire her master’s degree in International Communication.
Clancy Harris is currently a senior at the University of Washington, double majoring in Political Science and Communication. She grew up on Whidbey Island and then moved to Seattle where she has lived for the last nine years. Clancy currently works as a colorist at Gene Juarez Salon. After graduating in June she will attend law school in the fall of 2011.
Kelsey Larsen is a senior at the University of Washington, double majoring in Communication and Comparative Literature (Cinema Studies). She was born in Seattle, Washington in 1989 but moved with her family to Marysville, Washington a few years later. She has studied abroad in Europe and wishes to have a career in television or film production.
Mitchell Larsen is a senior at the University of Washington majoring in Communication. He was born and raised in Renton before moving to Seattle for college. In his life he has traveled to many foreign countries including Fiji, Peru, and Italy. He is currently interning for Rivals.com covering the Husky basketball team. In his free time Mitchell is almost always doing something involved in sports. This includes going to Seahawks games, playing ultimate Frisbee as well as sports writing.
Rachel Losek is a senior at the University of Washington majoring in Communication. After Rachel graduates she hopes to get a job working in the media. Rachel is currently interning with KOMO 4 News where she has learned what goes on behind the scene of a news corporation picking up video editing skills and public relations knowledge. Rachel plans to travel to Italy and to the Bahamas this year to gain international experience.
My name is Hayden Mills and I am a 22 year old senior and communication major. I’m a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and live in a house in the U district. In my free time I love to read and hang with friends. I have a golden retriever named Buddy, a cat named Tipsie, an older sister named Taylor, and my parents are Jill and David.
Taylor Moore is a senior majoring in Communication and Sociology. She was born in Farmville, Virginia but grew up in Olympia, Washington where she moved when she was two years old. Taylor loves cats more than dogs and enjoys watching the Food Network and traveling to new places. She currently works at the Ram Restaurant in University Village and plans on pursuing a career in communications and marketing after graduation.
Michael Nelson is a senior at the University of Washington pursuing a double degree in Communication and Political Science. Following graduation Michael hopes to continue his education and earn his Masters Degree. In the past, Michael interned for 950 KJR Sports Radio. In his free time, his hobbies include snowboarding, playing sports, and hanging out with friends.
Sophia O’Donnell is a junior at the University of Washington. She is studying political science with a focus on American politics. She is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and has held a variety of positions in the chapter. Sophia was born and raised in Mukilteo, Washington. She grew up in the restaurant business and currently works at her family’s Irish Pub, Shawn O’Donnell’s. After college, Sophia plans on attending law school.
Catherine Pellanda is a senior at the University of Washington and is majoring in Communications with a minor in Political Science. She was born and raised in Olympia, Washington and currently works at Shawn O’Donnell’s in Everett, WA. After college Catherine hopes to take a year off to travel around Europe and return the following Fall to attend graduate school.
Megan Petty grew up in Bothell and currently lives in Seattle and attends the University of Washington. She is Communication major and is earning a Retail Management Certificate. Through the program, Fashion Week is at the end of February and she is in charge of the Decorations. This should give her a great opportunity to express her creative side.
Daniel Riojas is a senior at the University of Washington and is double majoring in Latin American Studies and Political Science. He grew up in Seattle and graduated from O’Dea High School. He has recently returned from South America where he studied the public and mental health care systems of Chile.
Ashley Rosenfield is a senior at the University of Washington. She is double majoring in
Psychology and Communication and hopes to become a child psychologist. She was born
in California, but her family was originally from South Africa. Ashley goes back to visit her grandparents in South Africa almost every summer with her parents, twin brother and younger sister.
Naser Sadat is a senior at the University of Washington, majoring in political science. He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and immigrated to Seattle in 2000. He is fluent in three languages Urdu, Farsi, and English. He is planning on graduation this spring quarter. After graduation he is planning on traveling to Brazil to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and later pursuing a career in international business. In his free time he competes in Grappling tournaments.
Dannielle Stewart is a senior at the University of Washington majoring in Communications with a minor in International Studies. Currently Dannielle works at Palisade restaurant as a hostess but after graduating from the University of Washington she hopes to pursue a career in public relations or Advertising. Dannielle has gained experience in marketing and public relations through an internship with the online event planning organization Groupdyne.com. This summer she is hoping to travel to Europe for a month before she embarks on the next chapter of her life. In her free time she enjoys reading, yoga, and spending time with friends and family.
Emily Stromme is a junior in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington with a focus on international communication. In addition, she is pursuing a French major as well. This past summer she travelled to Morocco, and hopes to expand her international travels even further after college. Ultimately, Emily hopes to one day work for the United Nations as a political affairs officer.
Tricia Thorson is a senior at the University of Washington majoring in Political Science with a minor in Law Society and Justice. Since its opening Tricia has worked as a server at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in bustling downtown Seattle. Tricia has also done internships including those in advertising for Giorgio Armani in Manhattan, and fashion marketing for Butch Blum in Seattle. After college she plans to travel throughout Europe before attending grad school.
Derrick De Vera is a junior at the University of Washington, double majoring in communication and political science. After graduation, he plans to work towards a Masters in Public Administration and a Law Degree. He is very passionate about law, politics and becoming an advocate for underrepresented communities of color. Derrick is also very passionate about UW Husky athletics. Ultimately, it is his dream to become a professor at the University of Washington in which he can make an educational impact and still cheer on his Huskies.”
Jeffrey Richard Wong grew up in North Jersey about a half hour west of New York City. He is currently in his last quarter at the University of Washington and is double majoring in communication and political science. He enjoys watching Atlanta Braves baseball and UW Basketball and would like to pursue a career in sports marketing or advertising.
